Garden holidays in South Devon

South Devon Gardens
24th - 27th May 2010

South Devon is a landscape of contrasts, from moorland to wooded valleys, and our Spring tour will include some of the most popular and best loved gardens in South Devon.

From The Grand Hotel in Torbay we visit Lukesland Gardens (see picture, left). Set on the slopes of Dartmoor, with a wonderful collection of rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas, these colourful gardens provide some of the finest scenery in the region.

Our next garden, The Garden House, is steeped in history, set in a tranquil Devon valley and is several gardens in one. The walled garden surrounds the ruins of Buckland’s medieval vicarage and, with many pathways and themed gardens to enjoy, this garden is truly inspirational.

After travelling across the Dartmoor National Park, and as a complete contrast, we call into Orchid Paradise, home of the world famous Burnham Nurseries to see their unique orchid display house and get some hints on how to care for these magnificent plants.

Burrow Farm Gardens (see picture, left) is a beautifully landscaped, tranquil garden, featuring in particular an azalea glade, woodland garden and bog garden, with superb views of the Devonshire countryside.

From here we travel to the garden of Coleton Fishacre, which lies in a stream-fed valley above the scenic Devon Coast. Tender and exotic plants thrive in the subtropical climate and paths descend through the informal wooded valley to the coastal path and lookout.

En route to Torquay we will break the journey with a visit to the wonderful Quarry Gardens in Warwickshire, a reclaimed wasteland filled with hundreds of azaleas and rhododendrons, blanketing the whole area with glorious colour. Just over the Devonshire border are the gardens of Knightshayes Court, a Victorian country house with formal terraces and an amazing walled kitchen garden, where we will spend time before reaching our hotel.

On our journey home, we will visit Holbrook Garden, near Tiverton, Devon, to observe the delights of a small private garden crammed with late spring colour and conclude our tour with a visit to the gardens of Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire. This magnificent site, with views of the Cotswolds hills at every turn, has many individual gardens and a fine Victorian kitchen garden.
