On our
Northumberland Gardens tour, Herterton House Garden, a modern masterpiece of
mixed styles and an excellent plantsman’s garden, is the first visit from our
base at the 4* Newcastle Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park, before experiencing
the grandeur and magnificence of The Alnwick Garden. This ambitious project
is a ‘Versailles in the making’, with its Grand Cascade water feature,
beautiful David Austin rose garden and Ornamental Garden. There are fun
features too – the bamboo labyrinth, the poison garden and the largest wooden
tree house in the world! An enormous, inspirational and fascinating garden.
The
garden at Bide-a-Wee Cottage is also extraordinary, as most of the garden is
hidden in a disused quarry on the edge
of a 500ft ridge - an unusual site with enormous variations in planting.
Travelling up the Northumbrian Coast, we cross the causeway to Holy Island to
visit Lindisfarne Castle and the small walled garden designed by Gertrude
Jeykll, and on our return we spend time in the superb gardens of Howick Hall,
with their collection of tender plants, shrubs and extensive arboretum.
En route
to Northumberland we visit the delightful Burnby Hall Gardens, home to the
biggest display of hardy water lilies in Europe, and Chesters Walled
Garden, with a remarkable herb collection set within a two-acre brick-walled
garden. On our return home we will visit Eggleston Hall Gardens, described as
a ‘Pandora’s box of surprises’, and Beningbrough Hall & Gardens, a
National Trust gem with stately parkland and sumptuous mixed borders.
