The Malvern Autumn Show   |   Back to Garden Holidays

The Malvern Autumn Show
23-24 September 2011

The 3* Hatherley Manor Hotel is set within its own parkland estate in the heart of the rolling green Gloucestershire countryside and within easy reach of a range of private gardens in nearby counties.

As we travel through Worcestershire, our first visit is to Astley Towne House, an exotic sub-tropical garden, set around an Elizabethan farmhouse. With many features, including a summer house, woodland temple and a grotto, this three-acre site is packed with tree ferns, banana and ginger plants, palms and cannas, producing wonderful contrasts and colours well into the autumn.

From here we journey on to the Picton Garden, an impressive plantsman’s garden which has been developed as a setting for a magnificent display of asters and other late-summer perennials. With around 400 varieties on show, from dwarf varieties to taller sprays, and a vast array of colours, there is an aster to suit every garden.

Travelling into the Cotswolds, our last visit is to Misarden Park Gardens, a very English garden with spectacular views over the Golden Valley, an area which lies between the Wye Valley and the border of Wales. Created in the 17th century, Misarden has enduring interest and fine features which have been added over the years, including topiary designed by Edwin Lutyens, a walled garden with herbaceous borders, roses and specimen trees, and more recently a summerhouse and rill.

Adjoining the garden is Misarden Nursery which specialises in hardy perennial plants. Our second day is spent at the Malvern Autumn Show, which boasts a mix of Autumn flowers, harvest produce and native livestock. There will be spectacular displays from the top nurseries, dramatic floral designs, rural crafts, including felt making, wood turning and spinning, and the fabulous giant vegetable competitions.

With the backdrop of the Malvern Hills and the onset of autumn, this informal and friendly show provides a fitting end to the horticultural season.
