The Portuguese island of Madeira, situated in the Atlantic off the north-west African coast, is the perfect setting for a plant-lover’s holiday. Madeira’s exceptional climate and volcanic soil create perfect growing conditions for cedars, mimosa, bougainvillea, poinsettias and orchids - some of the many plants blooming on this magical island.

Our Madeira holidays are based in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Steeped in history, there is always plenty of time to wander around the elegant shops, the famous flower market, baroque churches and pavement cafes.

The orchid collection at Quinta da Boa Vista is spectacular and at Monte, a hill town above Funchal, glorious tropical gardens surround the chateau-like Monte Palace. The Palheiro Gardens are famous for their Camellias along with a wide range of plants.

You can explore the island by following the 'levadas', a network of small canals which wind their way down through the mountains to woodlands and valleys, offering stunning views.

In May, the famous Madeira Flower Festival takes place over the weekend with parades through the streets of Funchal in traditional costumes, flower carpets, traditional music and a flower exhibition. The 'Wall of Hope', a new addition to the Festival, is built by children symbolising the hope for a better and more peaceful world.

Please note that Great Garden Getaways will not be organising a trip to Madeira in 2012.
