Jersey's Summer Gardens | Back to Garden HolidaysJersey is the largest and most southerly of the Channel Islands. Only fourteen miles from the Normandy shores, you will see more than a hint of French flair on the island, with its architecture and street names, and of course its cuisine, for which Jersey is renowned. Surrounded by warm Gulf Stream waters, the climate is mild and temperate and the landscape peppered with flower-filled gardens, wild flower meadows and lush vegetation. Jersey offers a myriad of white sandy bays, small fishing harbours and dramatic coastal scenery, along with minimal travel time and no language or currency confusion.
Our trips to Jersey will usually encompass a visit to Creux Baillot Cottage Garden in St Ouen, which is set in a tranquil valley, will reveal an amazing collection of rare and unusual plants packed into its small space. It is full of interesting features and the owner will take us on a personal guided tour to show some of the many unusual plants in her award winning garden. Les Aix is a large garden surrounding a Jersey granite house, with features dating back to 13th Century, and includes a cider orchard, maze, garden rooms, vegetable and sunken garden. Another delightful garden in the parish of St Peter is Lande a Geon, a south facing garden which has been landscaped with a series of terraces and overlooks the magnificent St Aubin’s Bay. There are many fine, mature trees and a recently developed Mediterranean area containing a dry garden with exotic plants and bamboos. A guided walk through the spectacular private and public gardens of Rozel, in the north east parish of St Martin, will reveal the colourful gardens of Les Vaux and Rosel Manor, with its varied garden of palms, wild areas, a lake and a private chapel. In contrast, the wind-swept western coastline, home to the National Trust for Jersey, contains many varieties of flora and fauna, and our expert guide will identify them along with the local wildlife and the resident marsh harriers. Our garden visits encompass a wide variety of plants, from tree ferns to tender exotics, and scented roses to colourful annuals. Please note that Great Garden Getaways will not be organising a trip to Jersey in 2012. More information about upcoming garden holidays in Jersey is coming soon. |
