Garden holidays in the East of England

East of England Gardens

21st - 24th June 2010

Renowned for its open countryside, huge skies and sweeping views, our summer tour will include a variety of gardens in this beautiful part of England.

Staying in the Stoke by Nayland Hotel in the very heart of Constable Country, we visit Spencers, a traditional country estate in rural Essex with gardens overflowing with summer plantings. The walled garden at Marks Hall, Coggeshall (pictured left), is a modern garden within its 18th century walls, and is set in the centre of a 200-acre arboretum with woodland walks winding around unusual shrubs and trees. Our trip to the county of Essex would not be complete without a visit to the beautifully landscaped gardens of the renowned Beth Chatto, who converted a site of wasteland to a world famous garden containing a variety of plants providing year round interest.

The delightful Wyken Hall, a romantic Elizabethan manor house, is surrounded by 4 acres of formal gardens, including a herb garden, knot garden, rose garden featuring old roses, and kitchen garden. A walk through the ancient Wyken Wood leads you out to the vineyard, which produces grapes for their prize-winning wines.

Travelling into the heart of the open Suffolk countryside, we will visit the famous gardens of Helmingham Hall (pictured left), a double-moated Tudor mansion house set in a 400-acre deer park. The exceptional walled garden with its colour themed borders are in immaculate taste and the intricate knot garden and parterres are unique. With so many different areas to explore, each with its own personality ranging from the formal to the informal, we will be spending the afternoon at Helmingham to gain maximum enjoyment.

En route we will be visiting Wytchwood, a private Cambridgeshire garden amassed with summer perennials, meadow islands and a spinney of native trees. From here we travel a short way to Netherhall Manor, an elegant walled garden filled with old-fashioned plants. On our return journey we will call in to the immaculate Pauger’s Nursery and garden, before visiting the small, private garden of Rosewell House, with splendid views of Ely Cathedral and surrounding fenland.
