On our Classic Gardens of Cornwall
tour, based in St Austell at the Cliff Head Hotel, we will be visiting
some of the most popular and best loved gardens this area of Cornwall
has to offer. On our doorstep are two of the most famous: The Lost
Gardens of Heligan, one of the largest garden restoration projects in
Europe, and The Eden Project, site of the world’s largest greenhouses,
housing a vast range of plants from the Mediterranean and tropics.
Not far from Eden, and as a complete
contrast, is the wonderful Pine Lodge, a private garden and nursery with
a huge variety of plants set within many garden styles. Trewithen
Gardens offer the ideal choice for a Spring garden visit as they are
renowned for their magnificent collection of camellias, rhododendrons
and magnolias. On a smaller scale, Trist House is a romantic, intimate
garden, displaying masses of tulips and herbaceous plants.
Traveling further down the coast, we
take a short helicopter trip to Tresco, on the Isles of Scilly, to visit
Britain’s most exotic paradise garden – the wonderful Abbey Gardens. A
unique sub-tropical garden with magnificent views, it truly lives up to
its title ‘England’s Island of Flowers’. As an alternative to Tresco, we
will be offering visits to Trengwainton, a National Trust garden with
splendid views of Mount’s Bay, and Trevarno Estate, a tranquil Victorian
garden combining both formal and informal elements and seen at its best
in spring. En route to Cornwall we will visit Hestercombe, near Taunton,
one of Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens’ greatest masterpieces, and on
our return home we will visit the variety and charm of RHS Garden
Rosemoor. On both journeys we will also make a refreshment break at
Webbs of Wychbold.
Cost: £435 per person (single room
supplement £15 per night).
Note: Helicopter trip from Penzance to
Tresco Gardens is not included in price.
